Around 400 dead in accidents during Eid journey

Around 400 people were dead in accidents across the country during Eid-ul-Fitr journey, according to two platforms working for commuter rights.

Road Safety Foundation said at least 376 people were dead and 1,500 injured in 283 accidents in Bangladesh in 14 days (April 25-May 8) during Eid journey.

Among the deceased, 38 were women and 51 children.

A total of 156 people died in 128 motorcycle accidents, which is 41.48 percent of the total fatalities, the foundation said.

Fifty-four pedestrians were killed in accidents. Besides, 49 drivers and helpers ofvehicles were dead in accidents during Eid journey.

During this time, five people were dead and two injured in seven waterway accidents and two people remain missing. Nineteen people were dead and three injured in 17 railway accidents.

Road Safety Foundation prepared the report based on data from nine national dailies, seven online news portals and electronic media.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity said that at least 418 people died and 844 suffered injuries in 372 accidents in 15 days of Eid journey.

The association said road accidents and deaths are 14.51 percent and 22.35 percent higher respectively compared to the same period last year.

Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of the organisation, revealed the information at a press conference at Dhaka Reporter's Unity today.
