50 hurt in clash between RMG workers, joint forces
At least 50 people, including law enforcers and garment workers, were injured during a clash between agitating workers and joint forces in Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila yesterday afternoon.
The clash erupted around 12:00pm and continued for nearly three hours in the Aukhabao area of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
At least 10 among the injured are law enforcement officers. The injured were taken to various nearby hospitals for treatment.
Mehedi Islam, senior assistant superintendent of police in Narayanganj, said 10 individuals have so far been detained in connection with the clash.
However, their identities could not be confirmed immediately.
According to police and local sources, at least 120 workers of Robintex (Bangladesh) Ltd, an export-oriented garment factory located in the Bhulta area, were terminated ahead of Eid.
Protesting this termination, the workers gathered in front of the factory yesterday morning for the third day. When members of the joint forces attempted to disperse the protesters from the area, the situation escalated into a clash, he added.
