Gang tries to rob truck with 25,000 eggs

A gang of criminals, armed with sharp weapons on a bus, robbed a truck loaded with 25,000 eggs on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Narayanganj.

Two robbers were caught as they were driving away with the truck early yesterday, said Khandaker Al Moin, director (legal and media wing) of Rab.

Four more were arrested later, he said in a press briefing at Rab Media Center in the capital.

The arrestees are Musa Ali, 40, Naeem Mia, 24, Shamim, 35, Roni, 26, Abu Sufian, 20, and Mamun, 24.

A team of Rab-11 identified suspicious movement of the truck on Bhulta-Golakandail Asian Highway in Rupganj. As the Rab team charged towards the vehicle, Musa and Naeem tried to speed away, but failed.

The rest of the gang members were later arrested on information from the duo, he said.

According to Khandaker, the criminals parted in three groups and robbed the truck.

One group blocked it with the bus, another tied the truck driver and his helper and boarded them on the bus. The third group drove the truck away, he said.

The law enforcers seized the bus from the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, rescued the truck driver and helper, and recovered three machetes and two Chinese axes.

Some of the robbers, however, managed to flee, he added.

After primary interrogation, Rab said the gang had been committing such crimes on various highways for the last several years.

All the members have daytime jobs but they rob people and vehicles at nights, it added.

Asked about the bus, the Rab official said the gang rented the bus from its owner around one and a half years ago but he never knew that his vehicle was being used for criminal activity.

All the documents of the bus are valid, he added.
