Two jailed for illegally transporting eight endangered langurs

The Wildlife and Nature Conservation Department has intercepted a truck carrying eight black-faced langurs, an endangered species, and arrested two individuals in connection with the illegal transport.
Rafiqul Islam, 43, and Rabiul Islam Sohag, 30, were arrested in a raid conducted early today at around 4:00am in Dhaka's Dakshin Jatrabari Kajla Bridge in Dhaka, said Wildlife Inspector Nigar Sultana.
"Based on confidential information, an operation was carried out early this morning on a moving truck and eight endangered langurs and arrested two individuals. Later, under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012, Sections 34(b) and 39, the Senior Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka District and Executive Magistrate Anik Saha imposed a fine of Tk 12,000 and a 21-day jail sentence on the arrested individuals through a mobile court. The eight Langurs were transferred to the Gazipur Safari Park for proper care."
Nigar Sultana further said, "The arrested were taking the black-faced langurs from Chattogram to Kushtia for sale. Based on secret information, the district administration, DB police and the forest department jointly rescued langurs including the accused."
