The acting vice principal of Habibullah Bahar College was hacked to death at an apartment in the capital's Uttarkhan early yesterday.

Syfur Rahman Bhuiyan, 45, was from Brahmanbaria.

His wife lives in a house in the Shantinagar area with their two children. However, Syfur mostly used to live in that apartment in Uttarkhan for the past few months.

The incident occurred around 5:00am on the third floor of a six-storey building, Ziaur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Uttarkhan Police Station, told The Daily Star.

A man -- who introduced himself as Syfur's nephew -- and a woman rented that apartment six months ago. Syfur used to live with them, said police.

Both the two have been on the run since the incident. Police suspect their involvement in the murder.

"We are trying to determine the motive behind the killing," said the OC.

Syfur was declared dead at a hospital in Uttara.
