Bangladesh will keep its mission in Sudan, for now
Bangladesh will continue to have its mission in Sudan operational considering the needs of some 1500 Bangladeshi citizens living there, despite the present turmoil in the African country.
"We have our consulate in Sudan. We asked our mission to take precaution, but as we have many citizens, we will keep our mission there," Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told journalists during a media briefing at the ministry today.
Depending on the situation, Dhaka will take a decision later, he said.
"We advised them to keep enough ration [food]…as long as we have our citizens there, our mission should also be there," he said.
Earlier, Bangladeshi citizens have been advised not to travel to Sudan, which is witnessing armed conflicts.
As of 21 April, at least 413 people have been killed and 3,551 have been wounded in the unrest, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The current Sudan conflict between the army and a paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began on 15 April 2023, prompting foreign countries to race to extract their diplomats and citizens.
