Brac University proposes changing name to Abed University
The Brac University authorities have proposed to change its name to "Sir Fazle Hasan Abed University", and "Abed University" for short.
A Brac university official and a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the development.
University sources said the board of trustees of Brac University took the decision to rename the university at a meeting on October 31, 2019.
On May 28 this year, the university authorities sought permission from the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education to change the name, the sources said.
Prof Biswajit Chanda, a UGC member (private university), told The Daily Star that he had not received any letter from the university yet, but the UGC had received a letter from the government regarding the name change request.
When asked if there were any legal restrictions on changing the name, he replied, "There are no such sections [in the act] regarding the name change of a university."
Brac University was established in 2001. Currently, around 14,000 students are studying at the university.
