Action against those polluting Ramchandrapur-Lautola canal: DNCC Mayor
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam has said they will take action against those who pollute the Ramchandrapur-Lautola canal recovered from encroachers recently and excavated to ensure its flow of water.
The DNCC will set up CCTV cameras and form a special team to monitor the canal to ensure its water flow and save it from pollution, he said during a visit to the canal.
"A truck station was constructed on Ramchandarapur-Lautaro canal around 14 years ago and we have evicted the terminal on January 23. After its excavation, we are now seeing its flow of water," said the DNCC mayor.
No one will be allowed to dump any kind of garbage in the canal, and if anyone does this, legal action will be taken against them, said the mayor.
"We have taken charge of 29 canals, which were almost dead due to encroachment and pollution, from Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority around one year and two and half months ago. Currently, we are working to ensure clean water flow of the canals," he said.
Urging city dwellers not to dump garbage in the canals, he added that residents dump different kinds of garbage like old sofa sets, polyethene, and different kinds of household waste into the canals.
The mayor along with other officials of DNCC crossed three and a half kilometre waterways of the canal through four engine boats from the beginning of the Lautola canal up to the connecting point with the Buriganga River.
After visiting the area, he said they will give license to 20 engine boats for plying on the canal initially which take only five minutes to cross 45 minutes way of the road.
Giving a warning to the farmers and house owners, he said, "You will do your business, there is no problem but don't pollute the canal. Don't think only about you, rather think about all, about the city."
Atiqul Islam also said that they will demolish all the structures built illegally on the boundary of the canal.
"We will set up walkways and greenery after the demarcation of all the canals and if there is more space, a bicycle lane will also be constructed," he said.
