Action against BRTA officials unless services improve in a month: Adviser Fouzul

The government will take action against Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) officials, including its chairman, if it fails to improve services within a month, said Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan today.
The adviser briefed the media about a series of decisions taken today at a meeting held at Bidyut Baban to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. The meeting was attended by four advisers and top officials of police and government agencies.
He also said that if needed, BRTA can take assistance from private service providers regarding verifying vehicles fitness and issuing driving licence.
At the meeting, the police was directed to take action to improve traffic situation and make a visible improvement within seven days.
As per the decision in a previous meeting in October, all buses that are over 20 years old and trucks that are over 25 years old have to be removed by May next year. The authorities have already published advertisements in national dailies today in this regard.
School authorities will be asked to use school buses to transport their students to reduce jam. A necessary directive will be given through education ministry.
The authorities will launch company-based bus operations on nine routes from February 25 on pilot basis, the adviser added.
