Dialogue only if BNP withdraws its four conditions: Quader
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said dialogue with BNP may be considered if it withdraws its four preconditions for participating in the next parliamentary election.
The development came hours after the US pre-election observation team recommended that political parties should engage in meaningful dialogue to ensure a credible, participatory and violence-free national election in Bangladesh.
Journalists asked Quader about the call of the US pre-election mission at a press briefing at the Secretariat today.
In response, Quader, the road transport and bridges minister, said if BNP withdraws its four conditions, then the issue of dialogue will be considered.
The minister also said they have no thoughts on a conditional dialogue. The four conditions set out by the BNP in their movement ahead of the next national election are: resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, dissolution of parliament, resignation of the Election Commission, and holding polls under a non-party caretaker government.
The US pre-election assessment mission has made five recommendations as a roadmap for progress toward credible, inclusive, participatory, and nonviolent elections.
On March 6, Quader ruled out any immediate prospect of dialogue between the ruling party and BNP. After a reporter asked about the possibility, Quader said, "I don't see any necessity [for a dialogue]."
