Garment workers lift Banani road blockade after six hours

Garment workers lifted the blockade from Banani's Chairmanbari today after around six hours of protest.

The demonstration began around 7:30am in response to the death of a female garment worker in a road accident earlier that morning. The blockade was lifted at around 1:30pm after police intervention, as reported by our photographer, Prabir Das, from the scene.

The accident occurred at the Chairmanbari U-turn in Banani, resulting in the death of a female garment worker and injury to another. The specific vehicle involved in the incident has not yet been identified. In response, workers from nearby garment factories initiated the blockade, disrupting traffic on both sides of the road and halting vehicular movement on the elevated expressway.

The protest led to severe traffic congestion in Banani and surrounding areas, affecting major roads including Mohakhali, Gulshan-1, and Gulshan-2. Commuters faced significant delays, with many vehicles stranded for hours. Some resorted to walking considerable distances to reach their destinations.

Law enforcement authorities implemented traffic diversions at Banani-Kakoli crossing and Amtoli in Mohakhali to manage the situation. Despite these measures, gridlocks persisted across multiple parts of the city. The elevated expressway remained closed for four hours, resuming operations at 11:45am.

Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Rasel Sarwar confirmed the casualty and the subsequent protest.
