Over 1100 calls made to 999 complaining of loud noise on New Year’s Eve

A total of 1,185 people called dialed 999 seeking remedy from the noise of fireworks, loud music, etc. on New Year's Eve last night, according to a press release signed by Anwar Sattar, inspector (media) of 999 service.
Of them, 387 callers are from Dhaka, while the rest 798 from the rest part of the country, it added.
The calls from city dwellers highlighted widespread defiance of the fireworks ban imposed by law enforcement agencies.
Apart from calling 999, many turned to social media to express their helplessness, saying that the loud noise, which lasted for over an hour, had frightened their babies, pets, and caused distress to the elderly.
The 999 officials, however, said they informed relevant police stations upon receiving the calls and efforts were made to address the issue.
Besides, a burning lantern fell on a shopping mall in Dhanmondi area, leading to a blaze. A fire engine rushed to the spot but locals doused the fire, the release said.
