Jahanara Abedin, wife of painter Zainul Abedin, dies at 94

Jahanara Abedin, wife of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, passed away today at the age of 94.

"My mother died at around 2:00pm at her residence in the capital. She has been suffering from old-age related complexities including dementia," Mainul Abedin, youngest son of Jahanara Abedin, told The Daily Star.

She left behind three sons, relatives, friends, and well wishers to mourn her death.

Jahanara's body has been kept at the Birdem mortuary, Mainul said.

"My mother's janaza and burial are likely to be held on Sunday following my brother's and relative's arrival in Dhaka by Saturday," Mainul also said.

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan expressed profound shock and sorrow over her death.

In a message of condolence, the VC said that Jahanara Abedin had a remarkable contribution to the success of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin.

Niaz prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
