At least 57 people, including policemen, were injured in a clash between police and BNP men in Sherpur this afternoon.

Md Hazrat Ali, secretary of BNP Sherpur district unit, said they had organised a programme at their Raghunathpur party office, protesting the recent killing of JCD leader Nayan in Brahmanbaria, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

When the BNP men in a procession were on their way to the office , police obstructed them, leading to altercations, and at one stage, the cops charged batons and fired blank shots and teargas shells, said the leader.

Around over 50 BNP men were injured during the police action. They received treatment at different hospitals, said the leader.

The BNP leader also said the party men saved him and the BNP district unit President Mahmudul Haque Rubel, also an ex-MP, from the police attack by facing police beating during the incident.

Contacted, Basir Ahmed Badal, officer-in-charge of Sherpur Sadar Police Station, said police went to the spot to remove the BNP men who blocked the busy area. However, they did not move and got locked into altercations with police, and at one stage threw brickchips.
