Jamaat-Shibir men attack cops from procession in Sylhet; OC, SI injured
Two policemen, including Sylhet Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge, were injured after activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir attacked them in Sylhet city this afternoon.
The policemen came under attack by the Jamaat-Shibir activists while they were holding a procession in Jail Road area of the city, our Sylhet correspondent reports quoting BM Ashraf Ullah Taher, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP).
The injured Kotwali Police Station OC Mohammad Ali Mahmud and Sub-Inspector Nishu Lal Dey were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said ADC Ashraf.
The police official said a group of Jamaat-e-Islami activists – carrying sticks – brought out a procession in Jail Road area of Sylhet city around 2 pm today.
On information, police from Kotwali Police Station and Bandarbazar police camp rushed to the spot and stopped them as the procession was interrupting public movement, said the police official.
During an altercation over the issue, at one stage, the Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked the policemen, leaving two of the cops injured.
"Police detained two Jamaat activists from the spot. But, they are yet to be identified," ADC Ashraf added.
