‘Restrictions may ignite violence’

GM Quader on not letting parties to hold events

Jatiya Party chairman GM Quader yesterday said if peaceful political programmes are restricted in the country, it may invite conflict and violence.

Quader, also deputy leader of the opposition in parliament, said if such a situation arises, it will be a bad sign for the next election.

"The ongoing violent politics is an ominous sign for the upcoming national elections. Given the circumstances, we are getting a message from the ruling party that the next election will be held using force and violence. It is unfortunate for the country," he said.

He was talking to reporters after visiting JP leader Shafiqul Islam of Mathbaria Upazila, Pirojpur, who is receiving treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

JP claimed that ruling Awami League men carried out the attack on Shafiqul on Friday while he was on his way to appear before a court.

GM Quader said, "The ruling party men and the law enforcement agencies are creating obstacles while we are carrying out political activities."

"We want to hold meetings and express our views peacefully. How can there be normalcy in the country if we are prevented from doing this?"
