People of different areas in Chattogram were left without electricity for more than two hours due to a failure in local power grid this afternoon.

According to officials of Power Development Board (PDB), a CT (current transformer) explosion at Madunaghat 132 KV substation caused the power outage, reports our correspondents from Chattogram.

As a result, people in various areas including Halishahar, Bandar, Nasirabad, Baddarhat, Ashkar Dighir Par, Chawkbazar, Badurtala, Kapasgola, Jamal Khan, Kotwali, Agrabad, EPZ, Pahartali, Lohagara, Hathazari, Satkania, and Anwara were left without electricity for around two hours, said locals in the areas.

Shahidul Islam, a local of Didar Market area, said the area was left without power since 2:30pm, adding, "We don't know the reason why there was load shedding for around two hours."

Abdul Mabud, a local of Halishahar area, said the area was left without electricity since 3:00pm while power was restored around 6:00pm.

However, PDB sources claimed that the technical glitch at Madunaghat 132 KV power substation caused power outage for 30 minutes to 1 hour at different parts of the city.

They said, after the mechanical and technical glitches were fixed, power was gradually restored in the areas around 5:50pm.

Contacted, PDB, Chattogram Region Executive Engineer Ghias Uddin said a CT at the Madunaghat 132 KV power substation exploded which caused the disaster in the local grid.

"We were able to immediately fix the mechanical and technical glitch and restore power."

He meanwhile said, due to the grid failure, electricity was cut off in different areas of Chattogram for around 30 minutes.

When asked, PDB, Chattogram Chief Engineer Rezaul Karim told The Daily Star that electricity supply was off for around an hour from 4:40pm to 5:50pm due to local grid failure.

Asked if the power outage was for an hour, why people in many areas claimed that they were left without power for around three hours, the PDB Chattogram chief engineer said, "Maybe there was load shedding at that time in those areas."
