Golam Sarwar laid to rest

Veteran journalist Golam Sarwar, editor of Bangla daily Samakal, was laid to eternal rest at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard in the capital yesterday.

He was buried around 4:40pm after his fourth and final namaz-e-janaza at the Jatiya Press Club.

Earlier yesterday noon, he was given state honour and tributes at the Press Club.

After honour was given to him on behalf of President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a guard of honour as a mark of state honour was given on behalf of Dhaka district administration.

After that, the Editors' Council, of which Sarwar was the founding president, paid its last respect to him.

A team of BNP leaders also paid him tributes at the Jatiya Press Club. Later, his colleagues, friends, journalist and socio-political organisations paid tributes to him.

Before being taken to the Jatiya Press Club, Sarwar's body was kept at the Central Shaheed Minar premises where people from all walks of life paid homage to the noted journalist.

At the Shaheed Minar, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, ruling Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Food Minister Qamrul Islam, Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Rapid Action Battalion Director General Benazir Ahmed, and Nijera Kori Coordinator Khushi Kabir, among others, paid tributes to the journalist. Before that, his coffin was taken to Samakal office. Staff and employees of the newspaper paid respect to him there for the last time.

His third namaz-e-janaza was held at a playground of Bangladesh University of Textiles near Samakal office in the morning.

Golam Sarwar breathed his last at Singapore General Hospital on Monday. He was 75.

He had been suffering from heart diseases and respiratory complications.
