EIU Survey: Dhaka ranked second least liveable city

Dhaka is the second least liveable city in the world while Damascus is the worst, according to the annual global survey of Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

Civil war and terrorism resulted in cities like Damascus to rank so poorly and unavailability of adequate infrastructure is responsible for the low score of Dhaka.

10 Least Liveable Cities In 2018

1. Dakar, Senegal

2. Algiers, Algeria

3. Douala, Cameroon

4. Tripoli, Libya

5. Harare, Zimbabwe

6. Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

7. Karachi, Pakistan

8. Lagos, Nigeria

9. Dhaka, Bangladesh

10. Damascus, Syria

Every city was assigned a rating of relative comfort for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

Each factor in a city is rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable.

Dhaka scored an overall of 38 out of a possible score of 100.

The summary of The Global Liveability Index

Dhaka scored 50 in stability, 29.2 in healthcare, 40.5 in culture and environment, 41.7 in education and 26.8 in infrastructure.

The liveability ranking considers that any city with a rating of 80 or more will have few, if any, challenges to living standards. Any city with a score less than 50 will see most aspects of living severely restricted.

Vienna of Austria was ranked the most liveable city with an overall score of 99.1.
