Ex-BNP lawmaker held over former NU VC murder
Former BNP lawmaker Mafidul Hasan Tripty was arrested from Dhaka’s Banani area this evening in connection with the murder of former vice-chancellor of National University (NU) Professor Aftab Ahmed in 2006.
A team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) launched a drive at the house of Tripty in Banani around 6:00pm and arrested him, Enamul Kabir, special superintendent of CID, told The Daily Star.
On September 23, 2006, three unidentified youths shot Prof Aftab, a senior professor of political science at Dhaka University (DU), entering his Fuller Road residence, adjacent to the British Council on DU campus.
Severely wounded, he was rushed to Samorita Hospital with two bullet wounds--one in the chest and the other in the hip. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to the city's Combined Military Hospital (CMH) where he died later.
His wife later filed a killing case with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection.
In 2008, one of the four suspected accused in the case gave his confessional statement before a court and disclosed the name of former BNP MP Mafidul Hasan Tripty in connection with the involvement in the murder.
Today, CID official Enamul Kabir said Tripty went into hiding since then.
