The High Court today issued a contempt of court rule against the home secretary, inspector general of police (IGP) and chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on charge of not implementing its order over installing speed governor seals in all motor vehicles.

In the rule, the court asked them to explain in four weeks why legal action should not be taken against them for not complying with its directive.

The HC bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali came up with the rule following a contempt of court petition filed by Nasir Uddin Khan, a resident of Dhaka, against the three government high officials.

Petitioner’s lawyer Barrister Mohammad Abdul Muntakim told The Daily Star that the HC in 2009 directed the authorities concerned of the government to take steps to install speed governor seals in all the vehicles by June 30, 2010 to control the speeds of the vehicles in a bid to prevent road accidents.

But, the respondents have not taken any step for complying with the HC directive, which amounts to contempt of court, he said.
