Post Eid cleanup: City admins claim mass progress

Dhaka city corporations have claimed mass achievement in delivering to the promise of cleaning up the capital of animal wastes within 24 hours.

While Dhaka South City Corporation has claimed of 90 per cent cleanup, Dhaka North has claimed “success” for what it said was due to “responsible role of city dwellers”.

Speaking at a press briefing at Nagar Bhaban, Saeed Khokan, mayor for Dhaka South, said: “We achieved 90 per cent success. Qurbani will continue tomorrow. Our cleaners will stay round the clock until Qurbani ends.”

“We will present the city dwellers a 100 per cent animal waste free city,” he said, according to Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

Meanwhile, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Panel Mayor Jamal Mostafa said people of Dhaka played more responsible role to keep the city clean this year.

They showed more responsible actions in cooperating the city corporations’ initiative to manage waste, he said at a press briefing today.

The panel mayor said that the city corporation authorities, as declared earlier, could complete the otherwise challenging task of cleaning waste of sacrificial animals in 24 hours.

Around 2,01,500 animals were sacrificed in DNCC area in the 183 designated spots, he said; adding that this year more people responded to sacrificing their animals in the designated spots.

Around 280 waste disposal vehicles carried 8,500 tonnes of waste to landfills in 1,545 trips. A total of 9,500 cleaners diligently worked to make Dhaka clean in 24 hours, he added.
