'EU to import more leather products, shrimp'
Outgoing Ambassador Micheal Drury, the Head of Delegation of the European Commission in Dhaka, called on Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Khaleda Zia at her official residence yesterday, reports UNB.
They discussed bilateral issues, particularly trade and commerce, during the hour-long meeting.
Micheal Drury said Bangladesh faces a tough competition in exporting readymade garments as the European countries would withdraw quota system at the end of 2005 from the garments sector.
He suggested that Bangladesh has to improve the quality of garments for surviving in the competition.
The envoy, however, assured that the import volume of leather and leather products and shrimp by EU countries from Bangladesh would be increased in the days ahead.
He thanked Begum Zia for extending cooperation in discharging duties during his five-year tenure in Bangladesh.
With the completion of his term in Bangladesh, Drury retires from the service.
