Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said it would be possible to control the dengue situation if people are aware and play a responsible role.

The mayor made the remarks while exchanging views with the media after inspecting mosquito eradication activities in the area adjacent to Madhubazar Jam-e Mosque in West Dhanmondi today.

"From one source, it can pose a public health threat to everyone in the entire area. It is possible to have a large number of larvae and mosquitoes in the water stored in a container. So first of all, we have to play a responsible role. We don't say we can eradicate 100 percent, but if people are aware, we can control it."

Taposh said, "We are conducting operations to control dengue. Our mobile courts are being run. We have gone to 2,133 establishments, holdings, houses so far (from June 18 to July 11). So far, we have found larvae at 138 places.

"However, the dengue situation cannot be determined by these statistics. Because the number of larvae that can or is likely to occur in one place is enough to create an uncomfortable environment in the whole area. So, we want everyone to play a responsible role," he said.

"If all the big business establishments, the schools, the establishments we have -- if their respective authorities play a responsible role, we can all together control the dengue situation," he added.
