JU teachers start all-out strike

Jahangirnagar University (JU) teachers went on an all-out indefinite strike today as their seven-day ultimatum for the vice-chancellor's resignation ended Thursday.

The teachers under the banner of JU Teachers' Association (JUTA) took position in front of the administrative building since 7:00am, boycotting their classes, reports our JU correspondent quoting Prof Sharif Uddin, general secretary of the platform.
All the administrative activities also remain suspended as no one was allowed to enter the building since morning, the general secretary said.
The members of JUTA, a platform for all teachers of the university, also halted the university's transport services, he added.
JUTA observed a week-long work abstention from October 24 demanding the resignation of Prof Anwar Hossain, who joined as JU VC in May 2012.
On the same day, the teachers also threatened to go for an all-out strike from today, if the VC did not resign by Thursday.
The crisis at the university began on April 6 this year when JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League General Secretary Rajib Ahmed Rasel assaulted a teacher.
The agitating teachers demanded Prof Anwar’s removal for not expelling Rajib that time.
They also accused the VC of bias in teachers’ appointments, ruining the campus by taking up unnecessary projects, and misusing funds.
