7 tips for decorating your cubicle

Some people seem to think that cubicles are like cages. But speaking from personal experience, cubicles are far more effective for boosting your productivity than shared spaces. Having my own little space that I can decorate however I like is one of my favourite things about the office, so if you have your own desk, here's how you can make the working space more fun.

Hang up posters and drawings

Get posters that reflect your interests, they can be band posters, movie posters, or even just something that has a little message on it. You can also support local artists by buying art prints, those are quite unique, and usually of excellent quality. Try to get designs that are colourful and aesthetically pleasing.

Make a custom calendar

Creating calendars with customised images is pretty easy using Photoshop, but if you don't want to do that, there are plenty of cute calendars that you can buy. This would be a welcome change from the usual desk calendars you receive from random companies with stock images on them.

Hang your favourite photos and postcards

Use a string and clips to make an Instagram-worthy display of your pictures and postcards. Some stationery shops carry colorful, patterned clips that'd be perfect for this.

Use washi tape creatively

One of my colleagues has put washi tape on everything on her desk, and it looks pretty cute. All her stationery and desk organisers have one specific theme now. Washi tapes are quite cheap, yet very useful.

Follow a colour theme

You can set one specific colour palette, and buy all your decorations and stationery accordingly. It looks very pretty, but it does put a lot of restrictions on what you can and cannot keep in your cubicle.

Bring back souvenirs from your travels

I have a colleague who's an avid traveller, and his desk is filled with little tidbits he got from exotic places he visited. This is a brilliant way to personalise your desk, specially since each piece has many memories attached to it.

Get a plant

Plants that don't need too much extra care are perfect for the office. Succulents work well in this case.

Make some origami

If you're bored at work, get some paper, look up an origami tutorial, and make a cute animal or object. Then you can use those as decorations for your desk.

You might be wondering what the point is of putting so much effort into decorating a cubicle, but once you do it, you'll know how much it adds to your overall experience at the office. On those bad days when you can't motivate yourself to work, having a nice workstation may just help you get things done. So invest in some cute stationery, buy a small cactus, and get some customised posters.
