300 turtles seized in Savar

Law enforcers today seized 300 turtles and detained four people on the Dhaka-Aricha highway at Savar on the outskirt of the capital.

Tipped off, police carried out a search in a microbus at a check post near Jahangirnagar University around 12:30pm and seized the turtles, said Sarwar Hossain, officer in-charge of Savar Highway Police Station.

The turtles were found in nine plastic bags inside the microbus, the police official told The Daily Star.

The law enforcers picked up four people in this connection. The detainees are Rekha Biswas, 49, Hafizur Rahman, 39, Nurujjaman, 42, and driver Rony Mia, 35.

The police seized the microbus and filed a case with Ashulia Police Station under Special Power Act in this regard, the police official also said.

In a primary interrogation, it was revealed that the turtles were smuggled from India through Benapole border to be sent abroad, he added.
