It has been quite a while since the big shopping centres of the capital where mostly affluent people shop started to be teeming with customers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. But the picture of the footpath or roadside shops tells a different story. They are yet to attract buyers in large numbers because the poor like slum residents or garment factory workers whom they cater to are presumably still without enough money to spend on the festivity, which is only 11 to 12 days away. The monsoon not only brings woes to the residents of Dhaka city where most streets are potholed, but also life to the otherwise dying and murky Buriganga, known as the capital's lifeline. The photo on the left was taken on July 2 and the one on the right on June 2. Photo: Anisur Rahman
