Record heatwave kills 10 in Shanghai

More than 10 people have died in China's commercial hub Shanghai, a local health official said yesterday as the city swelters in its highest temperatures for at least 140 years.
Much of China is in the grip of a summer heatwave, and the China meteorological office issued a high temperature warning for several eastern and central provinces, saying temperatures could reach 41 degrees Celsius yesterday.
Pak clashes kill 10

Fierce clashes between Pakistani security forces and Islamic militants on Tuesday left 10 people dead in northwest Pakistan close to the Afghan border, officials said.
Dozens of armed insurgents attacked check posts in Khyber tribal region with eight militants and two soldiers killed in the ensuing gunfight.
Iraq violence kills 9

Attacks in Iraq killed nine people and wounded 19 yesterday, officials said, as the country witnesses its deadliest violence since 2008.
With the latest violence, more than 850 people have been killed in July, and more than 3,100 since the beginning of the year, according to AFP figures based on security and medical sources.
Myanmar floods, 25,000 evacuated

Nearly 25,000 people have been evacuated to makeshift camps after floods ravaged eastern Myanmar, an official said yesterday, as relief teams struggled to reach remote areas inundated by water.
Flood waters have risen dramatically after several days of heavy rain in Karen State forcing thousands to flee to nearly 80 relief camps, officials told AFP.
UN gives Congo rebels ultimatum

The United Nations on Tuesday gave M23 rebel forces 48 hours to disarm in the area around the city of Goma in the volatile eastern Democratic Republic of Congo or face "the use of force."
A new UN intervention brigade will be used for the first time to help the DR Congo army set up a "security zone" in the city, the international body said.
