JCD president, 5 others sent to jail
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) central President Rajib Ahsan and five of his associates were sent to jail after police produced them before a court in Patuakhali this afternoon in connection with a case filed for possessing yaba tablets.
Tareque Sams, senior judge of Patuakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, passed the order, Azam Khan Faruqui, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dumki Police Station, told The Daily Star.
The OC however said police did not seek any remand against them in this connection.
Azam Khan Faruki, Rajib’s lawyer, told The Daily Star that he would submit bail petition for the six JCD leaders tomorrow.
Earlier, police arrested the five allegedly with yaba tablets in Dumki upazila of Patuakhali last night.
Protesting the arrest, the JCD announced two-day protest programme across the country from tomorrow.
As part of the programme, demonstration will be staged at all cities, districts and public universities tomorrow, and the same programme will be held at upazila, municipality and college level on Wednesday.
The programme was announced at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka today.
A team of police arrested them with 45 pieces of yaba after raiding a private car at Lebukhali ferry terminal on Barisal-Patuakhali highway around 11:30pm, said Azam Khan Faruqui, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dumki Police Station.
“They were going to Kuakata from Barisal,” the OC said adding that the political identities of the other arrestees could not be known immediately.
Sahed Ali Pathan, assistant superintendent of police in Patuakhali, said Ahsan is accused of several cases filed for subversive acts. “He is now being interrogated by Detectives Branch (DB) of police,” the police official told our Patuakhali correspondent today.
