Surrender before lower court, SC tells Tangail MP

The Supreme Court has stayed a portion of a High Court order asking law enforcers not to harass or arrest Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, ruling party lawmaker from Tangail-3, and his brother Shahidur Rahman Khan in Faruk Ahmed murder case.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain also upheld another portion of the HC order directing Amanur and Shahidur, current mayor of Tangail Pourasava, to surrender before the lower court in two weeks in this case.

The apex court judge passed the order after hearing a government petition today moved by Additional Attorney General Murad Reza seeking stay on the HC order.

Shah Monjurul Hoque, a lawyer for Amanur and Shahidur, told The Daily Star that his clients have to surrender before the lower court in a week following the SC order, since the HC has ordered them one week ago to surrender in two weeks, and one week’s time has already been passed.

The bullet-hit body of freedom fighter Faruk, also a district AL leader, was found on January 18, 2013. A murder case was filed on July 21, 2013 in connection with the incident.

Two accused of the case gave confessional statements before a court about involvement of Amanur and Shahinur in the murder, Deputy Attorney General Bashir Ullah told The Daily Star recently.

Following a bail petition, the HC on July 14 ordered Amanur and Shahidur Rahman Khan to surrender before the lower court in two weeks and also ordered the law enforcers not to harass or arrest them in two weeks.
