Visiting a 200yr old haat (video)
Surrounded by colours, drenches in sweat and a buzz all around – part and parcel of what a traditional haat in the villages still look like.
For those city people who have never seen a haat or miss its allure from the good old days, we bring you one from Narayanganj that has been sitting for about two centuries now.
Kaikkertek, Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj. Every Sunday the place hosts the weekly haat that has been sitting there from the British era about 200 years back, locals say.
Vegetables, fresher than found anywhere else, fishes absolutely amazing, meat just slaughtered and fruits picked from the trees – the haats are what every city household looking for good, safe food wish they had access to.
And like any city supershop, this Kaikkertek haat has anything and everything that is needed for human living – just as it has been from the era of the barter system.
