Leader through votes, Hasina tells BCL council

Leader will be selected through councillors’ votes, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina tells Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists at the inaugural ceremony of the 28th council of the party at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on July 25, 2015.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today told leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) that leadership of the student body will be elected through direct votes of its councillors.

“The leadership of Chhatra League will be elected by the councillors through ballot box as it has been done in the past,” Hasina, the president of Awami League, said while speaking as a chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of BCL’s 28th council at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka this morning.

Councillors of the party will elect their leaders directly through votes and the democratic process in the party will continue, Hasina said.

She advised the BCL leaders and activists to pay attention to meritorious and regular students so that they can be elected as leaders.

Several thousands of BCL leaders and activists from across the country joined the two-day long ceremony at the Suhrawardy Udyan which started at 11:00am.

The BCL members from district, upazila and thana levels joined the council where new leadership were likely to be picked by the AL high command, not by voting in the 28th council, said AL and BCL sources.

Among others, Syed Ashraful Islam, general secretary and public administration minister, Tofail Ahmed, commerce minister, Obaidul Quader, road transport and bridges minister and Siddiqui Nazmul Alam, BCL general secretary, spoke at the first day of the two-day long council chaired by HM Badiuzzaman Sohag, BCL president.

In her speech, Hasina told the BCL leaders and activists to help maintain a proper atmosphere in educational institutions in the country.

The AL president advised them to develop a sacrificing mentality in upholding the party's ideology.

According to the BCL constitution, its president and general secretary are elected by councillors from across the country.

The present central committee was formed on July 11, 2011 for two years. Though the BCL was supposed to hold its council in 2013, it couldn't do so.

The new committee is likely to be announced tomorrow, on the second day of the council.

BCL sources said several names had come up as strong contenders for the posts of president and general secretary.

They include BCL Joint General Secretary Shamsul Kabir Rahat, Environment Affairs Secretary Saifur Rahman Sohag, Deputy Law Secretary Biplob Hossain Polash, Assistant Secretary Zakir Hossain, central committee member Enamul Haque Prince, and BCL leaders Shahidul Islam Shahed, Anwar Hossain Anu and Azizul Haque Rana.
