2 burnt as pickets torch vehicles in capital

Drivers of two CNG-run auto-rickshaws suffered burn injuries as pickets set their vehicles on fire in Azimpur and Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the capital, on the second day of the 84-hour hartal enforced by BNP-led 18-party alliance today.

The opposition has enforced the hartal demanding a non-party polls-time government and in protest against the arrest of three top BNP leaders -- Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Rafiqul Islam Miah.

City thoroughfares have been witnessing more vehicles than yesterday.

Few private cars are also seen plying the streets, reports our correspondents covering the hartal events.

No long-distance bus left or entered Sayedabad bus station.

Huge contingents of law enforcers were deployed in front of the BNP’s central office at Nayapaltan since morning, private TV channels report.

KERANIGANJ

A group of pickets vandalised and set afire an auto-rickshaw after pouring petrol at Kadamtola around 8:00am.

The driver of the three-wheeler, Yakub Ali, 28, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with 12 percent burn injuries, hospital sources said.

AZIMPUR

Sagor, driver of an auto-rickshaw, sustained 18 percent burn injuries when pickets torched a three-wheeler in front of BDR Gate No. 2 around 1:20pm, witnesses said.

Sagor, 18, is undergoing treatment at DMCH.

MIRPUR

Pro-hartal activists blasted several cocktails from a procession in the morning, according to media reports.

Savar
