Bullet-hit Joypurhat Jamaat man dies

An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami, who suffered bullet wounds during Saturday’s clash with law enforcers in Joypurhat, died at a private hospital in the capital early today.

The death toll of the clash hit four with the fresh one.

Abdur Rahman, 45, succumbed to his injuries around 12:30am, reports our Dinajpur correspondent quoting Shamsul Alam, assistant secretary general of Jamaat district unit.

Rahman was injured during a gunfight between Jamaat activists and members of police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh in Puranpoil area of Sadar upazila Saturday evening.

Two Jamaat men -- Shamim Hossain, 24 and Insan Ali, 22, -- died on the spot while a rickshaw-van puller was killed being caught in the gunfight.

Eight persons, who were injured during the gun battle, were rushed to Joypurhat Modern Hospital from where Rahman was shifted to the hospital in Dhaka for better treatment.

The gunfight ensued after around a thousand Jamaat-Shibir men encircled patrol police team, BGB and Rab members, who rushed to spot receiving information that the activists were gathering there to commit subversive activities.

Local Jamaat men were making an announcement through loudspeakers in Puranpoil area since morning that Rahman's namaz-e-janaza would be held in the afternoon.
