HC seeks list of Hazaribagh tanners
The High Court today directed the industries secretary to submit before it in three weeks the list containing names and addresses of the businessmen who are still running tannery industries in Hazaribagh area of Dhaka.
The HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice AKM Shahidul Haque passed the order in response to a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
The organization submitted the petition on April 12 seeking the HC directive on the industries secretary to provide the names and address of the people running tannery industries at Hazaribagh in violation of its judgement.
Petitioner’s counsel Manzill Murshid told the Daily Star that many people have reportedly been running tannery industries at Hazaribagh although the High Court in 2001 and 2009 has directed them to relocate the tanneries to Savar by 2010.
The High Court later on extended the directive till 2013.
The industries are running the tanneries in violation of the High Court directive which is contempt of court, he said.
Manzill said they will pray to the High Court to initiate contempt proceedings against the tanneries owners after the industries secretary provide their names and address.
