Civil body Shujan criticises UP polls again
Once again, civil body platform Shushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) has strongly criticised the union parishad elections held alleging they were “controversial”.
The polls were marred by deaths in violence, nomination business, uncontested wins and attacks on minority groups, alleged Badiul Alam Majumder, Shujan’s secretary.
Irregularities in the union parishad polls put this issue at the forefront, he said.
He was addressing at a press conference at The Dhaka Reports Unity in the capital this morning. Shujan says it is a platform working for good governance.
M Hafiz Uddin Khan, Shujan president, and media person Md Jahangir were present at the briefing.
Up until now, union parishad elections have been held in Bangladesh in three separate phases. At least 22 people have died so far in violence and there have been reports of irregularities.
Violence in the elections did not spare policemen and journalists.
Polls to 743 UPs are slated for May 7 in the fourth phase and 733 UPs for May 28 in the fifth phase. Around 700 more UPs will go to polls in the sixth phase in June.
