JP MPs walk out protesting HC verdict

Jatiya Party lawmakers today walked out from the parliament protesting the placing of a bill on Supreme Court judges’ remuneration in a show of displeasure over scrapping of a constitutional amendment that empowered parliament to impeach SC judges.

Led by Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament Raushan Ershad, the opposition MPs walked out at 5:39pm.

As the Law Minister Anisul Huq was scheduled to place the Supreme Court Judges (Remuneration and Privileges) Amendment Bill-2016, JP lawmaker Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu requested the minister not to place it before the house.

Terming today’s High Court ruling that scrapped the 16th constitutional amendment as unconstitutional, the JP lawmaker asked why the parliament should increase the remuneration and privileges of the SC judges even after passing such a verdict.

Talking on point of order, He asked the law minister to keep placing the bill on hold until the issue of 16th amendment to constitution is settled.

Replying to him, the law minister said the bill was not introduced for any individual.

“It has been formulated for an institution,” he said, urging all to be generous.

He later placed the bill.

The JP lawmakers however returned to the House six minutes later.
