[WATCH] JLo reminds you women only “Ain’t Your Mama”

Pop icon Jennifer Lopez has just put out her new single “Ain’t Your Mama”, an effort to empower women and breaking the gender stereotypes women are subjected to. The song, which the 46-year old had premiered last month in a live performance at the “American Idol” finale, has already garnered quite a buzz in social media, including a thumbs-up from Hillary Clinton, who is herself vying to be the first female US president.

The video sees JLo take on the a number of women’s roles in a retro-style settings, from news anchor to homemaker, secretary, factory worker and businesswoman, all the while defying stereotypical gender roles like cooking and cleaning, as she mentions in the lyrics. The catchy tune, along with the incredible dancing chops of JLo, keeps the song upbeat. At a point, she asks women from all across to shout out, and women from all walks join her in a final street march/dance showdown.

The song’s intro uses a voice sample of Hillary Clinton’s address at the 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference On Women, and Hillary yesterday responded to the song in a Tweet: “@JLo thanks for this. Women are so much more than the roles they've been assigned. –H”

While hardcore feminists will still argue about the nature of the visuals of the song, which – unsurprisingly for a pop hit – can be seen as objectifying women, the song and its message is directed at the everyday woman, and they could well find some strength and empowerment in the diva’s latest track.
