Bulls N Barrels The first mock pub of Dhaka
As I was almost dictating myself to not doze off in-between a room full of aunties during the second day of Eid, I suddenly got a call from one of my friends asking to meet up. Luckily, my mother witnessed my sheer level of tedium and eventually let me go. After having to do a roundabout for almost a half hour, we finally decided to head to Dhaka's newest fixation "Bulls N Barrels".
The interior is appealing, especially the floors and the bar area. The lighting too, is effervescent. The place is quite large with the only drawback being the seats, which I found uncomfortable.
The menu has limited items; they probably wanted to concentrate on food that would be cohesive to their bar concept. Coming to the food, there were five of us. As most of us were on the fuller side we decided to stick to the refreshments and appetisers. We tried the Fried Mushrooms which according to me was quite an amusing rip-off. It came with tartar sauce but was too simple a dish to be priced at BDT 250. The BBQ chicken (half) with mashed potatoes and rice was typical and a bit overpriced as similar dishes are available elsewhere at much lower prices and more relish. The chicken tasted a bit bitter probably due to the stale BBQ sauce and the mashed potatoes and rice were strictly "average" with the former needed to be ordered separately, which really made me question the point of the dish. It cost us BDT 695 with the mashed potatoes costing us another 150 bucks.
The drinks we ordered were the Green Mint Lemonade, The Blue Lemonade and Berry Me in the Sand. Believe me, each were more beautiful than the other, but the taste - not so beautiful. They tasted zingy and had an unpleasant astringent flavour. The Blue Lemonade wasn't all that bad though. I don't particularly remember the prices of each but they were all within BDT 150-200.
Last but not the least, the best part of my Bulls and Barrels inhibition were the Hot Chicken Wings. I would dare to go as far to claim it as the best I've had in the Gulshan-Banani radius. The chicken was moist, beautifully marinated with the hottest spices and definitely cooked to perfection. It had hints of crispy skin, enough to make my small heart happy. Each bite paired with their garlic sauce was downright heaven. It was priced at BDT 350, a little more than most places, but it's so worth it.
Bulls and Barrels somewhat overcharge than most places but not to the amount that it would question our affordability. If only the food met the standard, the prices wouldn't seem so awry.
The place as I've mentioned before is a bar-restaurant or a mock pub so if you drink, the place and its food might appeal to you, but if you're like me, who's just a passionate foodie, the place might not be just right for you. But, if you're a spice lover like yours truly, the hot chicken wings are undeniably worth a visit.
