Leicester City: A script only football can write
From getting relegated to League One (third tier of English football) in 2008 to gaining promotion to the Premier League in 2014 to becoming the champions of England in 2016, Leicester City's rise to the top is one of the greatest stories football could ever write.
On the 2nd of May as the ball rolled in Stamford Bridge, football fans across the globe kept their eyes glued to the game between Chelsea and Tottenham. When the latter took a two goal lead, spectators had their hands on their heads in disappointment. Afterwards, when Eden Hazard curled in Chelsea's equalizer, they erupted with joy. That day the impossible happened, supporters of different teams came together to cheer for a common interest: Leicester City.
I am finding it hard to put down to words the emotions that Leicester's campaign generated. Their rise to the top was driven by passion, hunger, fearless temperament and an unfaltering attitude that the biggest of clubs at times lack. They played with nothing to lose and enjoyed themselves to the fullest. Wes Morgan's leadership, Robert Huth's commitment in defense, Riyad Mahrez's skill on the wings and Jamie Vardy's clinical finishing are all to praise for and most importantly, the presence of Claudio Ranieri, a humble personality and a passionate guide, on the sidelines was as important as Vardy and Mahrez's goals. Not only did they dismantle the best of the league, they picked up important wins against the dangerous sides from the lower half of the table and as the reality of the outcome was beckoning, they kept their nerves to seal the deal. Right from the start, Leicester were the deserving winners.
As they got closer and closer to getting there, the world of football held its breath, and when it happened, we all celebrated it like the victory was our own. It's because a season like this comes by once in decades and Leicester's march to the title shows that money is not what a football club needs to thrive at times, often you need a player as hungry as Mahrez, a striker like Vardy who will get the decisive goals and a guardian like Ranieri who will watch over you as you set off to your mission. Leicester were the perfect blend that you need to create a title winning team and their success redefines the beauty of this game.
It's still too early to predict where this club will stand in the years to come and it's difficult to wonder if they will repeat this season's trick but for the time being, let's commemorate one of the most glorious seasons one could ever have witnessed and let's celebrate Leicester City!
