India says it supports war crimes trial
India has said it is supportive of the judicial process to ensure justice in the war crimes committed during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
"The issue of war crimes trial is internal to Bangladesh. It has wide popular support. India has also been supportive of a judicial process to address pending issues of retributive justice for war crimes committed during the movement for the independence of Bangladesh in 1971," Vikas Swarup, spokesperson of India's external affairs ministry, told reporters in reply to a question on the execution of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rahman Nizami yesterday.
Nizami was hanged in the early hours of Wednesday in Dhaka Central Jail for war crimes committed during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh against Pakistan in 1971.
