HM Ershad has been re-elected as Jatiya Party chairman and his wife Raushan Ershad senior co-chairman uncontested.

At the national council held at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka the councillors also re-elected GM Quader and Ruhul Amin Howlader as co-chairman and secretary general of the party respectively.

After an election commissioner proposed names of the candidates, the councillors and delegates supported the proposals raising hands and finally through voice votes.

The whole process took about five to seven minutes.

“I will try my best to take Jatiya Party to the power,” Ershad told the gathering after his re-election.

Earlier in the day, Ershad said the present electoral process will have to be amended as 82 people have died in different phases of the union parishad elections so far.

People have not accepted the UP elections, he claimed.
Muscle power, arms cadre, black money are the main key to getting nomination in the existing electoral system, Ershad said.
“But we want such a system where people will not vote for any individuals, they will cast their vote for political parties,” he said.
And after that political parties will select their lawmakers in proportion to vote, he added.
Ershad also called upon those who have left JP to rejoin the party.
