Scenic Ctg hills turn to death traps (video)
The scenic green hills of Chittagong turn to death traps with the arrival of rainy season every year.
Thousands of low income people have been living by building shanties in government and privately owned hills over several decades. Cutting of trees, bushes and earth to build the shanties are the main reason behind the destruction of the green hills as well as the deaths of many people.
During the period of 2007 to 2015, at least 191 people were killed in hill-slide.
According to the district administration, at least 30 thousand families are living in hills in Lalkhan bazar, Motijhorna, Tigerpass, Roufabad, Amin Colony Tankirpahar, Amin Textilepahar, Pahartali, Akbershah, Firozshah, Biswacolony and Batalihill areas.
Such large number of population in the hills results in destruction of the scenic hills and the number of deaths in hill-slide goes on increasing day by day.
