Govt should apologise over pregnant mother shooting: Ershad
Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad today said the government should apologise to the nation over the shooting of an eight-month pregnant woman during a Jubo League factional clash in Magura.
Expressing frustration over recent violence on children across the country, Ershad, also a special envoy to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said even a baby in its mother’s womb is not safe now.
“I can’t imagine how much brutal we’ve become.”
He observed, “These incidents are taking place as the perpetrators know it very well that nothing will happen to them.”
Ershad made the comments while taking to reporters at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after visiting the bullet-hit baby Suraiya and her mother Nazma Khatun.
“Those responsible for it should be tried. But I don’t know whether they’ll be tried. The government should apologise to the nation for it,” he said.
The baby was injured when her eight-month pregnant mother was shot in the abdomen during a factional clash of an associate body of Awami League on July 23 in Magura.
The bullet went through the unborn baby's right shoulder and damaged her right eye. She survived a two-hour Caesarean on her 35-year-old mother at Magura General Hospital.
The baby was moved to the DMCH on July 26 as her condition stated to be critical.
