‘Robber’ killed in Brahmanbaria ‘gunfight’

An alleged robber was killed in a 'gunfight' between his cohorts and police at Shashai on the Dhaka-Shylhet highway in Bijoynagar upazila early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Mohabbat Kha,29, a resident of Koarpur village in Nasirnagar upazila of the district.

Officer-in-charge of Bijoynagar Police Station Ali Arshad said on a tip-off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery on the highway, a team of police launched a drive there at about 3:30 am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire at them, prompting the police personnel to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, leaving Mohabbat injured.

Later, Mohabbat was rushed to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Other associates of Mohabbat managed to flee the scene.

Three policemen, including Sub-inspector Shafiqul, were injured during the gunfight.

Police also recovered a pipe-gun and some sharp weapons from the spot.

Mohabbat was wanted in 11 cases, including for robbery, the OC added.
