Zoo officials on May 29 shot dead a gorilla after a four-year-old boy fell into its enclosure in the US city of Cincinnati.

The incident has triggered outrage and questions about safety, but zoo officials called the decision to use lethal force a tough but necessary choice.

Thane Maynard of Cincinnati Zoo said he would make the same call today as the gorilla was agitated and was hurting the four-year-old.

Harambe, the 17-year-old gorilla, was captured on video dragging the child across a moat in the enclosure.

In this video watch what transpired in the moments before Harambe's death.
