A vested group, which wants to grab state power by creating anarchy, might have dumped firearms and ammunition in a canal in Dhaka's Uttara area, police said.

"It is not an easy task for an ordinary man. It is the work of those who are engaged in hatching conspiracy against the country," Asaduzzaman Mia, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said at a press conference held at his office today.

Responding to a query, the DMP boss said two general diaries have so far been filed in this connection and officials of the Detective Branch are carrying out investigation.

The firearms and ammunitions have been brought to create a massive anarchy in the country but the criminals fled, leaving those in the canal in the face of strong efforts by the police forces, Mia claimed.

"Whoever is active behind the arms haul will be brought to book," Mia said.

It is easy to say that the arms and ammunition belonged to an organised terrorist group but it is difficult to say in which country the arms were made, he told a questioner.

Citing several positive activities of the DMP, Mia said the forces of the department are working in a bid to ensure people's peace and discipline after being inspired by the patriotism.

He claimed several criminals accused of blogger killing cases have already been arrested and motive of the cases have been detected.

"We are carrying out checking and searching operations by setting up check posts and block raids at different strategic points in the capital to keep it safe and secured for people," he added.

Citing an official tally, the DMP commissioner said the law enforcers recovered a total of 95 pistols of 7.62 bore, 2 locally made pistols, 192 magazines of 7.62 bore, 263 magazines of SMG, 10 bayonets, 840 rounds of bullets of 9mm pistol, 217 rounds of bullets of China made 7.62 bore pistol and 180 cleaning rods in the drives.
