Cops, not ACC, to handle non-govt forgeries

Cabinet today approved an amendment to the Anti-Corruption Commission (amendment) Act-2015 which would bar the anti-graft body from dealing with forgery and cheating cases in the non-government sector.

From now on, these cases will be under the jurisdiction of the police, Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters after the cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat this afternoon.

However, the forgery and cheating cases in government properties and fraudulences by the staffs and officials of the government and state-owned banks will be dealt by the ACC, he added.

Thousands of forgery and cheating cases are pending to the ACC and it is facing difficulties to dispose of the cases, he added.

Police show unwillingness to deal with the forgery and cheating cases as these cases are lodged under the ACC Act, he said.

“As a result, disposal of the cases is delayed,” he added.

He said the cases which are lodged under the ACC jurisdiction is tried in the special judge court and it requires more time.

Responding to a query, the cabine secretary said the cases which are being tried in the special judge court will be shifted to the trial court with the existing progresses.

Similarly, the progresses of the investigation into the cases in the non-government sectors will be handed over to the police authorities concerned, he added.
