Court orders DNA tests of militants

A Dhaka court yesterday ordered DNA tests of the militants involved in the gruesome Dhaka cafe attack on July 1.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Nur Nabi passed the order after Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Inspector Humayun Kabir moved a plea in this regard.

In the plea, the police official said the DNA profiling of “six attackers” was necessary for future investigations.

On July 1, armed gunmen stormed into Holey Artisan Bakery on Road-79 in Gulshan-2 of Dhaka. They killed 20 hostages and two police officers in the 12-hour-long siege.

The stand-off finally ended when army commandos stormed the café around 7:40am the next day, killed “six suspected terrorists” and rescued 13 hostages.

One of the six was later identified as an employee of the restaurant, but  police say he helped the militants.
